To get our kids involved in making a difference, we are holding a COIN COLLECTION DRIVE at our school. Starting this week we will be collecting coins in our classroom. Students can bring in spare change to donate to cancer. You can help them earn change by letting them do chores around the house, by doing extra reading, and more! Students will also have a chance to earn change to put in our jug through positive behavior in our classroom. The coin drive will go until Friday, April 24th. Last year, we raised almost $3,000, so let’s do it again!

We also want to invite families to come out to the event! Both of us (Miss Thomson and Miss Lewis) have been a part of the planning for this event all year long. We will both be there the entire 18 hours! We would love to see our students and families come walk with us and join in on the activities. The event begins at 6:00 on Friday, May 1st. You can come for an hour or bring your family to camp out for the night! Let us know if you are interested! As always, thank you for your support.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-48105295614740546052009-04-09T13:58:00.006-04:002009-04-13T15:40:43.128-04:00Spring FeverWe came back from Spring Break with a BANG! Our last couple of days have been full of "spring-ish" activities. On Wednesday, we went on our final field trip of the year to the Jacksonville Zoo. We got to see the new babies and even the new Komodo Dragon exhibit! Students have become familiar with his books and are making connections with them during their book talks and in their writing. Students have been focusing on two main connections: text-to-self (connecting a book with something that has happened to them) and text-to-text (making connections between two or more books). The writing sample above is an explanation of text-to-text connections written by a student : "I am writing about text-to-text connections. If you do not know what it means I will tell you. It means that your book has a connection with another book. My connection is about The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the book called The Very Lonely Firefly."
Connections help with students' comprehension of a story. We encourage students to make connections with stories they are reading at home as well. Below are some examples of questions that can be used to facilitate student connections at home:
Text-to-Self:
What does this book remind you of?
Has something like this ever happened to you before?
How did you feel when you read this book?
Text-to-Text:
Does this remind you of something that happened in another book?
How is this book different from other books you have read?
Does this character remind you of a character from another book you have read?Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-82793243742358773062009-02-17T08:50:00.003-05:002009-02-17T19:08:30.640-05:00Will You Be My Valentine?On Friday, our class participated in various Valentine-themed centers planned by parents. The kids had an amazing time. We even had a snowcone machine! The quote of the day was from Lily: "I never had a best day in my whole life like this!" One or two of the Kindergarten classes will be at the various after school events handing out lemonade. There will be a donation box for any donations to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Our class, along with Mrs. Meissner's, had the privilage of running Alex's Lemonade Stand at the PTA Family Night last Tuesday. We are proud to say that we collected $116 for the fight against childhood cancer! Consonant digraphs are two consonants that join together to make one sound, such as ch, sh, th, wh, and ph. Letter combinations are two or three certain letters that make one sound when they come together. Here are the rhymes to help us remember letter combinations:
ay ay - see kids play
er ir ur - see the church
ar ar - drive the car
ow ow - one brown cow
st st - you must stop
ing ing - watch me swing
oy oi - see the boy
ea ee - let's go to the beach
oo oo - the ghost says boo
ue ew - find the clue
oo oo - read the book
au aw - I can draw
or or - shut the door
eigh eigh - this is eight
ou ou - see the mouse
ow ow - see the snow
all all - catch the ball

This week we are working on digraphs: th, ch, and sh. We are also working on the -ar letter combination and reviewing the -ay letter combination. Watch to see if your child recognizes digraphs and letter combinations in their reading and also uses them in their writing!Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-56659394564121111372008-12-17T21:56:00.002-05:002008-12-17T22:09:27.863-05:00ALL ABOARD Dressed in our pajamas, we boarded the Polar Express Train to celebrate the holiday season together.!We participated in fun holiday-themed centers that parents put together for us! Each day this week has a wintery theme, and in each of our workshops we did activities according to that theme. Math included! To celebrate Monday's gingerbread theme, we played a dice game called "Roll-A-Gingerbread Man." The students had to roll the dice, and based on what they rolled, had to add a certain part to their gingerbread man. On Tuesday, we enjoyed a snowman themed day. We read stories about snowmen and wrote "How to Build a Snowman" stories, but our favorite part was the "Melt-An-Ice Cube" Game in Math! Similar to the "Roll-A-Gingerbread Man" game, we rolled dice to see what we would do to the ice cube in order to get it to melt (such as breathe on the ice cube for 10 seconds, drop it, shake salt on it, etc.). The students came to the conclusion that placing the ice cube in water and putting salt on the ice cubes helped it melt the fastest. Enjoy the pictures from Monday and Tuesday's Math Workshops! Our class will be the Hopi tribe. This week we will begin this integrated unit where we will learn all about our Native American Tribe. On Friday, November 21st, we will conclude our unit by participating in a Native American Pow Wow celebration and various centers. The homework for this coming week is to research the Hopi tribe. Enjoy the pictures from our special day!Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-83727804332604918002008-10-19T17:45:00.009-04:002008-10-19T18:36:51.686-04:00My HeroOne of our "Star" book vocabulary words for Little Red Riding Hood was "hero." The hunter was a "hero" at the end of the story because he saved Little Red Riding Hood and her granny from the wolf. The students were asked to draw a picture of their hero. It was interesting to see their perspective of a hero:
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPusxaLJ1dI/AAAAAAAAALk/taoDET2UW7M/s320/scan0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258986954724857298" />
Sydni said her heroes are her parents!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPutMCw5gtI/AAAAAAAAAL0/-ltqVgqF6fk/s320/scan0003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258987412297188050" />
Mia said her heroes are the people in the Army and Navy!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPut2QxK6lI/AAAAAAAAAME/9r8-ww7jAT4/s320/scan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258988137610930770" />
Markis said his hero was his dad because he is in the Army!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPutrqmWfsI/AAAAAAAAAL8/EVRWYbIatmU/s320/scan0004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258987955566313154" />
Emma said that her hero was her daddy because he is a firefighter and he saves people!

Ask your child who their hero is!Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-53319941648086515602008-10-14T21:27:00.006-04:002008-10-14T22:09:33.521-04:00Our Shining Stars<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPVP3KNZVLI/AAAAAAAAALM/i0NYEvicivw/s320/VS1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257195949076862130" />
Today our class was video streamed live to the Shultz Center, which is where all of the county's professional development takes place! The Literacy 101 class, which is a course that gives teachers more background in Reader's and Writer's Workshops, dropped in to watch the stars in our classroom. They were able to see the transitions students make from Reader's Workshop share time into our Writer's Workshop mini-lesson. We already know how brilliant our little stars are, but today they showed the world how hard they have been working. <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HX_h6na2oiE/SPVQsNqk6sI/AAAAAAAAALc/tgQ4RNGK2uo/s320/VS3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257196860537629378" /> While Miss Lewis and Miss Thomson debriefed with the Literacy 101 class, students were able to show some of the Literacy and Math Coaches from our school their wonderful small moment writing. Well, on Monday during Literacy Stations, a student informed us that Lola's cage door was open and she was not in her cage. We discretely checked the cage and realized he was right, she was GONE! We had cleaned her cage on Friday after school and must have forgotten to lock the cage door. We frantically searched the classroom while the students were at lunch, but Lola was no where to be found! After still not finding her on Tuesday, we started to think that she may have been gone for good. As the students were returning to their seats during Skills Block, a student shouted, "THERES A MOUSE IN OUR CLASSROOM!" Of course, we were delighted to realize that it was just Lola running into the math manipulatives! Lola is now safe and sound back in her home!Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-38677426979994576082008-09-30T21:34:00.001-04:002008-09-30T21:46:24.111-04:00Literacy StationsWe have added a new part to Reader's Workshop: Literacy Stations! At this age it is hard for students to read independently for more than 15-20 minutes. To extend the time students are reading, we implemented Literacy Stations. Literacy Stations are centers that focus on reading. Some of the Literacy Stations that we are participating in right now are reading genre books(ex. Dr. Suess books, Arthur books, etc.), retelling "Star" books, retelling nursery rhymes, and telephone reading (students talk into a "telephone" made out of PVC pipe which allows them to hear themselves read).

Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-50688340137948810492008-09-21T22:05:00.000-04:002008-09-21T22:06:21.244-04:00Meet Chet!This year, we are going on a blogging adventure around the world with a little help from our new friend Chet! We are so excited because our classroom is one of the lucky rooms that is home to the new traveling bear for our school.
Are you wondering how Chet is going to get to travel the world? He gets to go with you! If you are going on vacation and would like to take Chet with you, he will pack his bag and be ready for an adventure. The only catch is that you will have to share your adventure with Chet with our class. You can take pictures, write a story, draw a picture - anything you can think of to share with us the adventure that you and Chet went on. We will post your adventure on this blog so that other classes can see the adventure you went on, and Mrs. Phillips can read all about it.
We can't wait to see where Chet will end up this year! Is anyone up for an adventure?Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7363356386850881809.post-51863754051370102682008-09-14T15:06:00.003-04:002008-09-14T20:56:23.982-04:00Educational WebsitesThe following is a list of websites that contain educational games and activities:

http://pbskids.org/lions/games/

http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bll/

http://www.starfall.com/

http://www.little-g.com/shockwave/loading.html

http://teacher.scholastic.com/clifford1/

http://www.kidsreads.com/wordscrambles/index.asp

http://www.sesamestreet.org/home/?scrollerId=games

http://www.kidport.com/Gradek/math/mathIndex.htm

http://www.learningplanet.com/stu/kids0.asp

http://schools.u-46.org/index.pl?id=13503Julia Lewishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07816686898878581715noreply@blogger.com1
